|Personal History||Dee was born to parents Patrick and Claire on Starbase 59, home of the Miranda-class USS Navajo. Ever since Dee could walk and talk, his parents soon realized he would too much for them to handle, considering they both had extensive careers in Starfleet. Their immediate solution was to produce another son to keep the other company. Their solution turned into a five-year project, but produced a girl instead, his sister Jessica.
As both Patrick and Claire were highly dedicated science officers and typically mission specialists, they decided that it would be inappropriate to keep the children on board a specialty starship. Luckily for them, the Navajo operated out of the starbase and maintained an average assignment duration of three weeks. The kids were left on the starbase while the Navajo went on its mission. Dee and Jessie always remained eager during these times to see their parents again. They would always be sneaking to one of the lounges near the docking bay and would have their eyes glued to the window, waiting to catch the first glimpse of the Navajo.
Dee and Jessie were waiting on that fateful day in 2369 when the Navajo did not return. The USS Yamato-B was dispatched directly from drydock to find the Navajo. Unfortunately, no trace of the starship was ever found. The kids were then shuttled back to Alpha VII, a barren world home to an Orion Syndicate hotbed, where they resided with Grandma MacGregor. She was unable to effectively raise the children, so Dee was forced to grow up early. He joined a local gang in order to gain protection for his grandmother, and especially his younger sister, to keep her away from Syndicate hands. Jessie disapproved of his actions from the start, mainly because of the fear that she would lose him too.
Three days before his sixteenth birthday, tensions between Dee’s gang and their rival gang (supported by low-level Syndicate members) had risen to the breaking point. A raid was planned that night into enemy territory by Dee himself, a raid that would end all conflicts. He, and a couple other comrades, conducted reconnaissance all day to make sure everything would go as planned. Jessie eventually caught wind of this. Not wanting any part, she packed a single bag, took her grandmother, and left town, heading west. It didn’t take long for Dee to learn of his sister’s departure, and immediately he was torn by loyality to the gang, and to his sister. After much debate, he took off to find his sister, angering his own gang in the process. The gang, now down one member, initiated their raid on enemy territory.
In the morning, the Federation News Service delivered a story about a gang war on Alpha VII, describing what appeared to be the final battlefield between two rival gangs. Not a soul survived. Dee did not learn of this until he found his sister and grandmother, who were both relieved to learn that he was alive. After seeing the psychological damage that he had caused to them, he vowed to live his own life more productively.
Thanks to a couple of their parents friends, the family moved to San Francisco on Earth, a place that provided life-changing opportunities. Dee was able to return to school, and though his desire to not return to his youthful ways grew, his promise to keep his family safe never wavered. Graduation approached and Dee began looking for vocational work that would keep him out of trouble (his sister’s lectures had a lot to do with that). His search led him to Starfleet Academy, where he completed four years of Security Training. Jessie entered Starfleet Academy during Dee’s senior year and quickly fell in love with Counseling. Two days before graduation, Grandma MacGregor passed away, completely devastating both grandchildren. Dee vowed to look for an assignment on Earth, but Jessie wouldn’t have it. “It was time to move on,” she pressed.
And move on he did.
A month after graduation, Dee shipped out for the USS Intrepid for a two-year assignment as a security officer. His tour was rather mundane, though he saw some excitement through Away Team duties. Most of his duties, however, saw him monitor diplomatic delegations and often oversee an empty brig. Advancement opportunities were limited on the Intrepid, so promotion also meant reassignment. Hoping for a change of pace, Dee transferred to the USS Valiant-A as a tactical officer, overseeing the aft torpedo launcher.
Seeing the galaxy through the eyes of a torpedo bay was actually quite exciting for the young officer. He accepted a few more assignments over time as he worked his way up the ladder, until his first chance as a Chief Security/Tactical Officer. When he learned of a mysterious ship from another universe was beginning to recrew for a deep space adventure, Dee thought he could have no better career choice, though it would mean a long time before seeing his sister again. News of her engagement to a fellow officer at her starbase gave him the confidence to pursue the opportunity.
